Many people would agree that oftentimes the book is better than its movie counterpart. In this situation I would agree one hundred percent! Although it is necessary to change things about a book in order to make it a movie that people will enjoy, some things just shouldn't be changed. And for the viewers that had read the book beforehand, there may have been some unrest!
My biggest complaint with the movie was the added romance between Jonas and Fiona. In the book, there is very little of this. However, in the movie both characters are older, thus the need for romance. I suppose this was done to keep the audience interested. For those that read the book, this was an unnecessary addition to the movie.
I also found that the movie was a bit more futuristic than I had anticipated. There were aspects of it that seemed way too advanced for an author in 1993 to come up with. In 1993 a drone was a male honey bee, yet in the movie these were big machines flying over the community.
The characters in the movie were not at all what I pictured them to be after reading the book. I guess this is the beauty of actually reading a book. Everyone has the ability to decide for themselves just how they think the characters look! That is also the problem with movies based off of books. If the characters don't match up, it may be hard for some people to enjoy the movie. In the movie The Giver, Jonas was a few years older than he was in the book. He also did not have pale eyes whatsoever. This was extremely bothersome as it was a pretty important characteristic in the book.
Overall, the movie was decent. Had I not read the book first, I may have enjoyed the movie a tad more. I also may have been a little confused. There were discrepancies between the book and the movie, as there always are. The writers did however do Lois Lowry justice for the incredible book she wrote twenty plus years ago.
